PROBLEMS AND TROUBLE SHOOTS

                             PROBLEMS

FOR Decorating OUR houses, It is a enjoyable things to do ourself . we should take care of preparing surface.if you are not prepare your surface good it will destroy the finished coatings. That is why i am writing some suggestion providing you with the required solutions for your house painting.

what types of problem you are facing at the time of preparing surface?

1.BLISTERING

what is blistering?

Blistering is the formation of bubbles resulting from localized loss of adhesion and lifting of the paint film from the underlying surface.

what it will Cause?

  • Rust, oil or grease on surface
  • Vapor expanding between the coated surface and the film due to humidity, construction defects, or lack of effective vapor barriers, moisture condenses on or saturates wood siding.
  • Painting with solvent-based coatings in direct sunlight on a surface that is too warm. This problem is prevalent in darker colors, due to absorption of heat, more than light colors.

 2.BLOCKING

what is blocking?

The paint sticks to itself when a window or door is opened and usually leaves bare patches of substrate.

what it will Cause?

  • Not allowing sufficient dry time for the coating before closing doors or windows.
  • Use of a semi-gloss or gloss paint with low blocking resistance.
  • Painting in warm conditions.

 3.BURNISHINGS

what is burnishings?

Spots of increased sheen that appear after paint has been rubbed or scrubbed.
what it will Cause?

  • Use of flat finish for areas subject to heavy wear and soiling
  • Furniture or other objects rubbing against walls.
  • Washing and spot cleaning frequently.
  • Use of low quality of paint with poor stain and scrub resistance

4.what is CRACKING?

the cracking of paint shows in finished paints surface

 what it will Cause?

  • Application of a topcoat before the undercoat is dry.
  • Application of an extremely hard, rigid coating, like alkyd enamel, over a more flexible coating, like a latex primer.

5.what is  FLAKING?

The splitting of a dry paint film through at least one coat, which will lead to complete failure of the paint. Early on, the problem appears as cracks; later, flaking of paint chips occurs.
what it will Cause?

  • Use of lower quality paint.
  • Over thinning the paint
  • Poor surface preparation.
  • Painting when the air or surface temperatures are too cold for the paint to form a film

6.what is  Foaming / Cratering?

Formation of bubbles (foaming) and resulting small, round concave depressions (cratering).
 what it will Cause?

  • Use of old or low quality paint.
  • Applying paint too rapidly, especially while rolling.
  • Excessive rolling or brushing of the paint.
  • Shaking a partially filled can of paint.

.

7. what is MILDEW?

Due to the presence of fungi that feed on the paint film; black, brown, or gray spots forms on the surface.
what it will Cause?

  • Lack of direct sunlight
  • Use of low quality point with insufficient significant material.
  • Painting over an old defected coating or substrate that is already defected.

.

8.what is  PEELING?

Loss of ribbons or sheets of paint due to loss of adhesion.
what it will Cause?

  • Paint not thinned sufficiently
  • Excess humidity or other moisture escaping from within the home through the exterior walls.
  • Inadequate surface preparation.
  • Use of low quality paint.

9. what is Staining?

Stains in the paint surface caused by virtually anything that would bleed, leak, or stick onto the paint film.

what it will Cause?

  • Water stains are caused by leaks in roofs or any source associated with water.
  • Fire or smoke damage.
  • Heavy tobacco smoking leaves yellow nicotine stains.

10.what is  WRINKLING?

A rough crinkled surface caused by a drying interference and forming a wrinkled skin.

what it will Cause?

  • Applying the paint too thickly.
  • Applying topcoat of paint to insufficiently cured primer.
  • Painting during extreme hot or cool/damp conditions will force the paint to skin rather than cure properly.
  • Painting over contaminated surface.

TROUBLE SHOOTING

1. Solution for blistering

  • Degrease the surface properly before painting.
  • If caused by moister, repair loose caulking and install vents or exhaust fans, which will allow moisture from in the house to evaporate before penetrating wood siding. Allowing moisture to escape via open windows can also be an option.
  • Sand and scrape peeling paint to bare wood or surface.
  • If the blisters do not go all the way to the substrate, then the blisters are likely from painting a warm surface in direct sunlight or exposing the paint film to excessive moisture. In any case, sand, scrape and then prime any exposed bare wood. Coat with a top quality acrylic latex exterior paint.

2. Solution for blocking

  • Use a high quality semi-gloss or gloss latex or oil paint with good blocking resistance.
  • Follow paint label instructions regarding dry times.

3.Solution  for BURNISHINGS

  • Do not clean with rough cleansers.
  • Clean surface with non-abrasive detergents using a soft cloth or a sponge, then rinse with clean water.
  • Paint heavy wear areas with high quality Paints' washable finishes.
  • Gloss finishes are easier to clean and resist soil for high traffic areas.

4.Solution for CRACKING

Remove old paint by scraping and sanding the surface.

  • Prime the surface with high quality latex, then paint with top quality latex paint.

5.Solution for  FLAKING

  • Remove the loose or flaking paint with a scraper or wire brush, sanding to feather the edges, priming any bare spots and repainting.
  • If the cracking goes down to the substrate, remove all of the paint then prime and repaint with a quality latex paint.

6.Solution for Foaming / Cratering

  • Use of high quality paint because the bubbles break while the paint is still wet.
  • Avoid excessive rolling.
  • Apply a proper primer.
  • Apply gloss or semi-gloss paints with a short nap roller

7.Solution for MILDEW

  • Clean the mildewed surfaces with water and cleaning detergents.
  • Remove all mildew by scrubbing with chlorine and water. Make sure all spots have been gone. Rinse again afterwards
  • When the surface is dry, apply one coat or two of National Top and for more protection we advise the use of Emulsion Trust

8.Solution for PEELING

  • Repair roof
  • Clean Gutters
  • Add the correct amount of thinner

9.Solution for Staining

  • Repair water leakage and replace any excessive damaged wood, plaster or drywall.
  • The stained area must be properly sealed with a primer designed to hold out water and rust stains.
  • Both fire damage and tobacco smoke stains must be sealed before top coating.
  • All stains must be primed with the appropriate primer in order to prevent bleed-through.

10.Solution for  WRINKLING

  • The wrinkled layers must be totally removed by sanding/scraping.
  • If using a primer, allow it to dry completely before applying topcoat.
  • Spread uniformly and avoid temperature and humidity extremes.
